The Department The Department of Biological Sciences has 18 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 4 teaching faculty. There are approximately 450 undergraduate and 50 graduate students enrolled in its programs. Undergraduate degrees are offered in biological sciences and biological sciences education. The department offers BA/BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees, and also participates in several interdisciplinary graduate programs: Cellular and Molecular Biology, Environment and Conservation Sciences, Genomics and Bioinformatics, Natural Resource Management, and STEM Education. Research in the department is clustered into three main focal areas: developmental and regulatory biology; ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology; and STEM education. Position Description The Department of Biological Sciences at North Dakota State University has a 12-month postdoctoral fellowship, beginning January 2, 2021. The successful candidate will work with a group of biology education faculty on an NSF-funded project to investigate systems thinking in undergraduate learning. In addition to working with project personnel, the postdoctoral fellow may also mentor undergraduate assistants, develop and teach undergraduate biology courses, and pursue independent questions about learning in biology education. Salary is competitive. Support is for one year with potential for renewal. Minimum Candidates must have 1) completed a Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in a discipline appropriate to biological sciences or in the learning sciences or cognitive psychology; 2) demonstrated interest in research in teaching and learning of biology at the undergraduate level; 3) evidence of peer-reviewed publications; 4) effective oral and written communication skills; and 5) ability to interact and collaborate effectively with a diversity of colleagues and students. Preferred Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability in one or more of the following: 1) working with complex datasets and use of multivariate statistics; 2) collecting and analyzing qualitative data; 3) experience mentoring undergraduate students in independent research; 4) experience developing curriculum; and 5) experience applying for grant funding Application Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a description of research experience (2 pages maximum), a teaching philosophy statement (2 pages maximum), and contact information (including telephone numbers and e-mail addresses) for three professional references under 'Other Document 1'.
