The Department of Architecture is a founding department in the new and innovative School of Design, Architecture + Art. A successful candidate is expected to develop a dynamic vision for the future of the program, the program's role in the School, and development of affiliations with other related programs on campus. The Department is NAAB accredited (next visit in 2026) and offers a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a professional Master of Architecture (M. Arch.). The Department enrolls approximately 340 students located in two state-of-the-art buildings in downtown Fargo. The Dept. has excellent resources, cutting-edge technology, significant scholarships, and an engaged advisory board. In its 100+ year history the department is proud of its alumni who are recognized as design leaders both regionally and nationally. Its core focuses on educating individuals to be great designers and leaders in the profession. NDSU excels in areas of innovative research and creative activities, with more than $153 million in annual research expenditures as reported in the National Science Foundation's Higher Education Research and Development Survey. NDSU has been listed in the Top 100 public research universities in the United States for research and development in agricultural sciences, psychology and social sciences, based on reported research expenditures. The Department is recognized in the region as a top program for architectural education. Responsibilities - Develop Department goals with faculty that aligned with the College and University's mission; - Facilitate student excellence, recruitment, and retention; - Create and sustain relationships between programs and architecture firms (locally, regionally, and nationally) - Fulfill responsibilities of advising (normally for transfer students) and regular committee assignments (at least one policy committee) - Teach a minimum of 6 credit hours per academic year; - Maintain department budgets and foundation budgets; - Create a high performing environment of a research and creative accomplishments; - Administration of human and financial resources; - Dedication to shared governance; - Foster external grants; - Administer a professional accredited program; - Create teaching schedules and staffing needs; - Foster and grow diversity in the student body and faculty. The Department is in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, which has a metropolitan population of 220,000 and boasts a small-town friendliness with the cultural and social life of a large city. Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be qualified by education and experience to administer programs in architecture with credentials that warrant a tenured appointment at a appropriate rank. Credentials must be one of the following: Master's degree in professional architecture (MA), plus architecture license OR; Professional Bachelor of Architecture (BA), plus a master's degree in a closely related field, plus architecture license OR; a Professional Architecture degree plus a PhD in Architecture. Applicants must demonstrate strong teaching experience, excellent accomplishments in scholarly and/or creative work, the ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others, a commitment to diverse peoples and ideas, and experience in leadership roles. Effective oral and written communication skills Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include professional registration, five or more years of experience in practice, leadership roles in national professional organizations, experience with the accreditation process, an exceptional portfolio of creative work and/or a significant record of high-quality publications, experience in global education, and experience leading strong academic programs.
